Manual JDS provides essential technical information that HVAC contractors use when choosing HVAC equipment for a residential application, ensuring effective system performance and energy efficiency.

Manual J calculates the heating and cooling loads
for the right capacity of HVAC equipment.
Manual D focuses on duct system design
for optimal airflow based on a room-by-room need to ensure an evenly heated and cooled home.
Manual S specifies equipment selection
to match calculated loads and duct designs.

Following these manuals helps avoid issues like system underperformance, temperature imbalances, and excess energy use, leading to enhanced indoor comfort, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.

What's needed?

Get familiar with the Requirements.

What information is needed for Manual JDS?

Floor plans that include the following information:
-Measurements (in feet) of all interior walls, including hallways and closets.
-Windows, skylights, and exterior doors marked on the drawing and their size (WxH).
-Room names
-Ceiling height and marked vaulted areas (height of their low and high point or roof pitch).
-Insulation values of the ceiling, walls, and floors.
-Type of windows and their U value, if known.
-Preferred brand of equipment.

If you don’t have official floor plans, you can always create a hand drawing (as shown on this drawing), but I urge you to double-check all measurements, as people often miscalculate the measurements. In this case, Graph paper will be your best friend.

I’ll also need to know what type of system you’re installing, preferred indoor temperature, and the type of duct you would like to use.

If you don’t know this information or don’t have a preference, I’ll make an educated guess or give you a recommendation.
